The discussion of evil is one of the most significant and enduring global issues, yet it receives less attention in Iran. The purpose of this article is to examine Paul Ricoeur’s unique approach to understanding the enigmatic concept of “evil.” The importance of addressing such topics lies in uncovering the insights and practical wisdom embedded in symbolic myths. a wisdom that guides us toward understanding the inseparable aspects of human existence. Ricoeur, through his interpretation of the symbolic language of myths, presents evil as a symbolic phenomenon that conveys a message about the human condition in the world.
The central question of this study is that modern humanity requires an introspective perspective to comprehend its existential finitude, and the symbolic interpretation of myths offers a potential path for moral growth. Thus, this article seeks to address key questions: From Ricoeur’s perspective, where does evil originate, and how does humanity become tainted by it? Is the existence of the devil best understood as a means of moral development? Does Ricoeur succeed in distilling the essence of primitive symbols and translating their truths into a philosophical vision for a better life?
Finally, can this article contribute to bridging the semantic gap experienced by modern individuals trapped in the snare of scientism? To address these questions, a descriptive-analytical method has been employed
