Rethinking Divine Mutability in Light of the Principles of Transcendent Theosophy

The immutability of the divine essence is widely regarded as one of the central commitments of philosophical theology and one of the best-known implications of Mulla Sadra's Transcendent Theosophy. Yet this conclusion has largely been derived from a particular group of Sadrian metaphysical principles, while little attention has been paid to whether all the foundational principles of this philosophical system necessarily support the same conclusion or whether some, when their logical implications are fully developed, point toward a different result. The central question of the present study is therefore whether the ontological foundations of Transcendent Theosophy, taken as a whole, entail divine immutability or whether some of them also justify attributing a form of dynamism to the divine realm. Employing conceptual analysis and philosophical argumentation, the article reexamines the principal Sadrian arguments for divine immutability and investigates the ontological implications of such doctrines as relational existence (al-wujūd al-rābiṭ), God's immediate causality, the unity of being, the correspondence of ontological realms, and the principle of the Simple Reality (basīṭ al-ḥaqīqah). The study argues that these principles do not yield a uniform implication. Rather, their apparent divergence arises not from any internal inconsistency within Transcendent Theosophy but from reducing motion to its Aristotelian conception as the transition from potentiality to actuality. By reconceiving motion as a disclosive rather than acquisitive reality, it becomes possible to affirm an appropriate mode of divine dynamism while preserving such doctrines as necessary existence, pure actuality, and divine simplicity, traditionally regarded as the principal metaphysical grounds for divine immutability. Accordingly, the question of divine mutability is shown to be not merely a theological controversy but also a philosophical problem concerning the internal coherence of the metaphysical foundations of Transcendent Theosophy.
