In the philosophy of Descartes, the principal attribute of res corporea is extension, while the essential attribute of ego cogito is thought. Richard Rorty's reading praises Descartes' mechanistic view of the world as being entirely devoid of any divine aspect, a perspective celebrated by Rorty due to his own staunchly materialistic outlook and his rejection of imposing spiritual or moral dimensions onto the world. conversely, Descartes posits the thinking substance as an immaterial and spiritual entity which is clear and distinct, thus establishing it as the foundation for his epistemology. This Cartesian conception of the soul is strongly critiqued by Rorty. Firstly, Rorty fundamentally rejects the mind-body dualism and Secondly, by adopting non-reductive physicalism, he proceeds to critique the notion of the mind, the entire epistemological tradition, and specifically Cartesian philosophy as the historical basis for the emergence of modern epistemology. employing a descriptive-analytical methodology and relying on bibliographical resources, this article articulates Rorty's criticisms of Descartes' philosophy in order to examine the fate of the human (being) without the Cartesian world within Rorty's thought.
