English

In the early nineteenth century, physicists held divergent views regarding the nature of light. Some regarded it as a wave, while others considered it a particle. Both groups defended their positions by presenting strong empirical evidence; yet none of them imagined that, only a few decades later, a theory such as Maxwell's electromagnetism would not only reconcile these two perspectives but also fundamentally transform them. P. Kyle Stanford, the American philosopher of science, takes a step beyond these two challenges by formulating the problem of "Unconceived Alternatives" (hereafter referred to as PUA). Drawing on historical evidence, he demonstrates that scientists in any given era not only overlook the existing alternatives to their theories but are also often unable to conceive of the reasonable alternatives that subsequent generations of the scientific community will eventually discover. Simon Maria Kopf, an Austrian theologian and philosopher of religion, extends Stanford's theory to the domain of theology. He explicitly raises this question and employs it as a methodological critique of common arguments in defense of Realist Theism. Kopf argues that inferring the correctness of a particular conception of God—whether through Inference to the Best Explanation (IBE) or through Eliminative Inference—lacks sufficient epistemic warrant as long as it remains confronted with the possibility of unconceived alternatives. He argues that inferring the correctness of a particular conception of God—whether through Inference to the Best Explanation (IBE) or through Eliminative Inference—lacks sufficient epistemic warrant as long as it remains confronted with the possibility of unconceived alternatives. Although Kopf assigns to revealed theology a role beyond mere reason, regarding it as an epistemic source capable of overcoming this methodological impasse, Stanford adopts a more radical approach and claims that the challenge of unconceived alternatives even extends to the domain of revelation itself.
